Over the past decade, corporate social responsibility (CSR) has become a massive part of running a business. By practising corporate social responsibility, companies can be conscious of their impact on society, including economic, social, and environmental. Many companies strive to ensure that their impact is positive; they want to enhance society andrather than contributing to it negatively.
CSR can come in many shapes and forms depending on the passions and goals of the business. If the people within a business have a strong passion for a particular area of corporate social responsibility, they will likely choose that as their focus.
Although CSR programs are more common among large corporations, small and medium-sized businesses that have a passion for positively impacting the world are jumping on board.
Ultimately, no matter your business size, you should be looking for ways to reduce your environmental impact, whether that be as simple as sustainable packaging or ensuring the ethical creation of your products. This is even more important as we continue to discover the environmental impact currently damaging our world. So even changes from small businesses can help to reduce the impact of business on our world.
Australian workwear brand BAD Workwear is one of the Australian businesses choosing to take corporate social responsibility seriously to minimise their impact on the world.
BAD Workwear is beginning to use recycled fabrics for their range of workwear items in a bid to minimise the impact that their clothing items have, and this is just the beginning.
As a brand bred from humble beginnings, BAD has now grown to be one of the largest workwear brands in Australia. They currently export high-quality safety workwear to the USA and worldwide, after finding their way into the relevant US market and moving upwards from there. Products that are both high-quality and environmentally friendly are often the first step for small and medium, hardworking businesses in terms of corporate social responsibility.
BAD Workwear has taken its corporate social responsibility further than what is generally seen from Australian workwear brands. As a 100% Australian owned workwear business, there is no competition, especially in relation to their CSR efforts. So, what is BAD workwear doing to give back to the environment and help to regrow forest ecosystems? Besides the continued use of recycled fabrics and their commitment to expanding their use of recycled materials in the future, BAD has more to offer.
When you purchase an item from BAD Workwear, a portion of every order is donated to reforesting previously cleared or degraded land. This includes projects such as Fazenda São Nicolau.
Fazenda São Nicolau
The Amazon rainforest covers 5.5 million square kilometres, which is nearly ten times the size of France. Generally considered one of the most unique and significant natural green lungs in the world, it has become essential to protect it. In the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso, the area has been hugely affected by the advanced deforestation that has occurred to extend the agricultural pastures needed for cattle breeding and soybean plantation. So, in the northwest of Mato Grosso, in the municipality of Contriguaçu, the Fazenda São Nicolau has become a platform for environmental observation, within which preservation of the environment occurs. The property known as Fazenda São Nicolau was acquired in 1999 to develop a reforestation and natural carbon sink project with the support of the national forestry office. In this time, over 7,164 hectares of natural forest have been preserved, including over 50 different native tree and plant species being planted.
The Fazenda São Nicolau helps protect biodiversity and mitigate climate change while continuing to work towards rebuilding areas impacted by advanced deforestation.
How Has BAD Helped?
By donating a portion of all their sales to Fazenda São Nicolau, BAD Workwear’s donation has helped to plant over 1 million trees and are participating in helping to regrow forest ecosystems impacted by deforestation in Brazil.
As part of BAD’s corporate social responsibility program, this initiative has allowed them to minimise their impact internally and externally to improve the environment.
